Too many rocks

Since I would have time to drive someplace further from home and hike before sunset, I decided to go for a hike near Superior again. I wanted to try to get to the top of that cliff to the east of Superior. I'm not a mountain climber, though. My plan was to approach the cliff from the east, going up a more gentle slope.

This is the land of balanced rocks.

This buzzard was munching on something when I disturbed it.

I had forgotten how many balanced rocks there are in that area. I felt like I was sure to come across some fascinating rock formations along the way. Before I even started, though, I wasn't sure how I would be able to move through the huge boulders. There were places where it was easy to move uphill, but there were also places where I would have to be a rock climber to make any progress. I wandered around for a little while trying to make it to the top of the first ridge along the way, then just wandered to explore and learn about the terrain. I was starting to get worried about finding a way out there but then having trouble finding a route back. It looks like there are probably a lot of ways to get through; it just might take a little while to find a way.

I was standing on a large rock (4.5 ft tall, 7 ft long, 2.5 ft wide) at one point and moved to one end of it to try to get a picture of a balanced rock further uphill. The rock I was on probably weighed about 10 tons. As I stepped carefully to one end, it began to move. That was scary. Fortunately, it stopped after moving a little ways. It rocked back and forth. I forgot about getting a picture of the balanced rock further uphill and carefully climbed down and moved away.

This was right next to where I parked.

After I gave up on getting to the cliff, I drove around a little and found out how far I can go before getting to a hill my truck couldn't climb. I stopped at a pullout on a paved portion of the road and found a marked trail. It didn't go very far, but that's just as well since my camera battery went dead. I've got to remember to look at that battery charge indicator now and then. It's a special battery, unique to the camera, so I didn't have a spare. I took some stereo pictures just before the battery went dead. Use the crossed eyes method to view.
