Gila Monster video
I was browsing through old pictures and videos today and came across this video of a Gila monster that I made on May 6, 2004. I was on the Massacre Grounds trail and the lizard was in the middle of the trail. It's the first of two Gila monsters that I've come across in the desert.

I've been hiking in AZ for about 15 years and of the only two times I have seen a gila monster one was at Massacre Grounds
I hear that sightings are rare. They spend something like 95% of their life in their burrow. The other one I saw was crossing the road that goes out to the Roger's Trough trailhead.
That is cool. I saw one years ago crossing a road in Lake Havasu City, which is probably the extent of their range. I have never seen one out while hiking. I suppose living in Flagstaff now has a lot to do with that :-)
Awesome!
Here is my latest encounter with a Gila monster.
Awesome! I've never been fortunate to see one. I've only ever seen a handful of plain old monitor lizards.
Kade and I were just talking about Gila monsters. I'll have to remember to show him this.
